WOMEN'S SOCCER: Cardinals go 2-1 at Friendlies

8/30/21

On Wednesday, August 25, the North Idaho College women's soccer team played Lower Columbia College who came out on top 3-1.

“We started off really slow and could never bounce back,” said NIC's Head Women's Soccer Coach Kellsi Parson. “The girls did a great job making adjustments at half time and competed really well in the second half.”

Lower Columbia scored three times in the first half. The second half of the game was mostly played on Lower Columbia’s defensive half, but the girls could not find the back of the net. Addison McCulloch finished a great shot over the keeper’s hands to finish the game off 3-1.

On Thursday, August 26 the Cardinals' first game was against Edmonds Community College.

“From the beginning the girls were ready to go," said Coach Parson. "They came out, took control and never looked back. The game turned into a track meet.”

Edmonds played a very high back line that made it hard for the girls to keep possession like Parson had talked with them team about. After taking many shots throughout the game, the girls earned a corner kick in the 60th minute. Zoey Beebe came off the backline to take it. Zoey served in a great ball that floated over the keeper’s hands and Lauren Oliva was there to finish it. After the goal was scored, the girls continued to push for another one but couldn’t find the back of the net again. The game ended 1-0 in NIC’s favor.

The second game on Thursday was played two hours after our first game ended. The Cardinals face Centraila College.

“We were the only female team to play three games at Friendlies,” Coach Parson pointed out. “I was a little nervous that we were going to be tired and come out flat footed like the first game of Friendlies, but the girls proved me wrong. From the beginning we controlled the game.”

The Cards came out, ready to go and dictated the pace of the game, much like the game they played earlier in the day. In the final minutes of the game, Addison McCulloch put pressure on the backline and caused a turnover deep in Centralia’s defensive half. She ended up beating their center back and the goalkeeper in the 89th minute to secure another win.

“It was awesome to see the girls push through two games in one day and come out with two wins.”

The women's soccer team plays again on August 30 at 3:00 p.m. in Spokane, Washington against Whitworth University.
