SOFTBALL: North Idaho splits with Walla Walla


The Cardinals came up one run short, losing the first game 8-9 on Tuesday, May 11 to the Walla Walla Warriors. The Cardinals put runs up on the board early, scoring from a two-run homerun hit by their three-hole batter, Kasey Davis, in the first inning. Taryn Vanderwiel went four-for-five at the plate for the Cardinals, with three singles, one homerun, and one RBI. Grace and Hope Shimatsu both went two-for-four at the plate, with two singles. In the top of the 7th inning, the Cardinals put the ball in play, but were unable to score any runs.

In game two against the Warriors, both teams battled with their bats but the Cardinals ended up with the 22-19 victory. Jadyn Raley-Jones and Amanda Curry both saw time in the circle, with Raley-Jones earning the win for the Cardinals. Leadoff hitter, Taya Escalante was perfect at the plate, going four-for-four with four singles and two RBIs. Taryn Vanderwiel also went four-for-four with three singles, one homerun, one walk, one stolen base and two RBIs. Kasey Davis was an offensive powerhouse for the Cardinals. Davis went six-for-six, with three singles, three homeruns, and 10 RBIs.

The Cardinals travel to Yakima Valley on Thursday, May 13. Their last game of the season is a doubleheader against Yakima Valley on May 16 at Memorial Field starting at 2:00 p.m.
