MEN'S SOCCER: Cardinals tie with Sasquatch

9/30/21

The Cardinals came out and played on their heels for much of the first half against Spokane on Wednesday, September 29, resulting in a tie 2-2. Struggling to connect passes out of the back third, they went down 1-0 in the 15th minute when Alex McNeill ripped one from outside the box for the lead. Spokane dominated possession and constantly trapped the Cardinals throughout most of the first half.

The second half started mildly better, but McNeill struck again from distance to push the lead to 2-0 in the 54th minute. Stuart Heringer had some huge saves to keep the game close. Approaching the 60 minute mark, the Cardinals made a handful of changes. Cameron Mason went in at outside back, then AJ Putnam entered the game at the other outside back and Omar Renteria went in at forward. In the 67th minute, the Cardinals struck. After a high rebound, Renteria got a foot on the ball with a low bicycle for the goal to bring the Cardinals to 1-2. In the 74th minute, Chris Meza entered the game to play as a high central midfielder, and the men continued to keep the pressure on the Sasquatch. In the 83rd minute, the Cardinals earned a corner and Michael De La Torre played a bender into the box with Chris Meza screaming toward it. Meza got a head on it and deflected to the side netting inside the far post to tie the game. The Cardinals had an opportunity to win it late, but Spokane goalkeeper Jason Sotello got a hand on it and forced another corner. Heringer made a few more big saves in the final minutes and the game ended 2-2. Heringer had 11 saves to Sotello’s three.  The Cardinals were outshot 16-6 overall and 11-3 in shots on goal.

The men's soccer team hosts Walla Walla Community College on Saturday, October 2 at 2:15 p.m. here on Eisenwinter Field.
