WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: 2019-20 Season Highlights

The 2019-2020 NIC women’s basketball season ended abruptly due to COVID-19, but it didn’t stop the Lady Cardinals from finishing on top with a 53-50 victory over Lower Columbia College in the first round of the NWAC Championship Tournament.

Last season, the Lady Cards took care of the ball and valued each possession; NIC committed less turnovers per game than any other team in the NWAC. They were also ranked sixth in the NWAC for steals, and fourth in defending three-point shots. The Cardinals came into the NWAC Championship Tournament as a #3 seed for the East after a three-way Eastern Region record tie with Wenatchee Valley College and Yakima Valley College.

With four sophomores finishing their time at North Idaho College, one decided basketball was a part of her future. Alex Carlton out of Palmer, Alaska, led the Cardinals from the point for the past two years. Carlton signed with Metropolitan State University of Denver, and is pursuing a degree in health care professional services. Carlton is not the only one who is departing NIC. After 16 years as head coach for North Idaho College women’s basketball team, Chris Carlson has decided to retire with an impressive career record of 354-158. Over the duration of Carlson’s career at NIC, he has led his teams to the NJCAA National Championships five times and captured the Scenic West Athletic Conference Tournament Championship title three years in a row (2009, 2010, 2011). In 2011, the Lady Cardinals won the NJCCAA tournament, where Carlson was named National Tournament Coach of the Year. Since NIC joined the Northwest Athletic Conference in 2016, Carlson led his team to the NWAC Championship Tournament in 2018, 2019, and 2020.

Coming into the 2020-2021 season there will be a familiar face replacing Chris Carlson as head coach. Former NIC point guard and the program’s assistant coach for the past two years, Korina Baker, will be stepping in as the interim head coach for this upcoming season. Baker brings her championship mentality to the program and is ready to continue the legacy that Chris Carlson spent 16 years building.
