MEN'S BASKETBALL: Defense key to Cards' victory


North Idaho College overcame a 13-point first-half deficit to beat Yakima Valley College 112-88 Saturday, Feb. 22 at Christianson Gymnasium. Down 36-13 with eight minutes remaining in the half, the Cardinals’ defense stiffened which ultimately resulted in a 49-47 lead at the break. In the second half, efficient offense took a strong hold as the Cards outscored the Yaks 63-41 in the final 20 minutes.

Nate Pryor exploded for 29 points while adding four rebounds, eight assists and three steals. Christian Guess hit for 21 points in just 29 minutes of play, while Emmitt Taylor III hit 5-for-9 from beyond the arc in the second half and scored a total of 20 points. Assistant Coach George Swanson pointed to the defensive efforts of Phillip Malatare and Marcus Austin during the webcast post-game show contributing to the comeback effort. Malatare finished with nine points to go along with six rebounds, three assists and three steals, while Austin tallied six points to go along with eight rebounds, five assists and two steals.

The Cardinals, 26-1 overall and 15-0 in the NWAC East Region, close out the season on sophomore night Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 7:30 p.m. against Columbia Basin College.
