MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cardinals off to a great start on home court

The North Idaho College men’s basketball team made the most of their season-opening weekend by winning a pair of lopsided victories during the CDA Inn-Vitational in Christianson Gymnasium.

On Friday, Nov. 29 NIC saw six Cardinals score in double-figures in a 120-48 drubbing of West Coast Prep. The Cards roared out to a 55-20 halftime lead and kept the pedal to the metal in the second half—outscoring WCP 65-28. Sophomore Yusuf Mohamed came off the bench to score a game-high 23 points while sophomore teammate Emmitt Taylor III added 20. Both players also grabbed six rebounds as NIC controlled the glass by a 49-22 margin. Other Cardinals who scored double-figures include sophomore James Carlson with 17 points and sophomores Phillip Malatare and Marcus Austin 13 points apiece. Carlson also had 2 blocks, Malatare added 6 assists, and Austin recorded 4 steals. Sophomore Jaden Dewar added 10 points and a game-high 9 rebounds.

On Saturday, Nov. 30 North Idaho College faced Elite Sports Academy, a team coming off an 81-75 victory over Wenatchee Valley College of the NWAC. The teams battled back and forth with the Cardinals taking a 34-32 lead into halftime. In the second half, NIC took over as the Cardinals improved to 4-0 with their 85-64 victory. Sophomore Marcus Austin came out on fire in the final 20 minutes, hitting 4 of his 5 three-pointers for a game-high 19 points. Emmit Taylor III knocked down 6 three-pointers for 18 points, while Yusuf Mohamed continued his outstanding play off the bench with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The Cards are back on the road Dec. 5-7 in Twin Falls, Idaho for the Wright PT/Physician's Immediate Care Invitational hosted by the College of Southern Idaho.
