MEN'S SOCCER: Season Comes to an End

NIC’s men’s soccer team tied at Spokane in their season finale last night. Spokane’s Brennan Murphy scored first in the 37th minute. Ruben Flores chipped the ball to Murphy’s right side. Murphy juggled it once and hit a dipping shot to the upper left corner of the goal. NIC’s Isaiah Damschen made four saves in the first half, including a kick save from close range to keep the Cardinals in the game.

In the second half, the Cardinals changed formations and created trouble for Spokane; forcing three saves from Richard Crews. In the 58th minute, Dorian Cornichuck played Noah Dreves into the attacking third. Dreves buried his chance beneath the keeper as Crews charged out to defend the net. Dreves had another opportunity a few minutes later but missed the post from outside the box. Ben Church and Shane Watkins had opportunities to score as well, while Zach Macalino and Will Kokernak kept Crews busy serving balls in from the flanks.

The tie concludes the Cardinals’ season, placing them just shy of the NWAC Playoffs. NIC’s men’s soccer team finishes the 2019 season with a league record of 3-6-3 and an overall record of 5-8-4. Strength and conditioning for the team will amp up shortly after the team staff assesses a shift in training phases.
