MEN’S SOCCER: Knights complicate Cardinal playoff hopes

The Cardinal men traveled to Wenatchee, WA on Saturday, Oct. 19 needing a win to maintain control over their playoff hopes and fell short. Three minutes into the match, the Wenatchee Valley College Knights earned a corner. Luis Rodriguez drove it to the far post and center back Erik Owen out jumped the Cardinals for the goal. The Cardinals remained calm and created a handful of opportunities but couldn’t strike. The Knights’ Alexis Calderilla made four saves in the half including a spectacular extension save of Andrew Abalan’s cracker from deep. The Cardinals defended well for the remainder of the half limiting the Knights to one additional shot on goal with Max Warnell making the save.

In the second half, both teams attacked well with Calderilla snuffing out a handful of dangerous balls and making six more saves for the Knights. NIC’s Isaiah Damschen made four tough saves and smothered a couple of through balls in the penalty area. The Knights extended their lead in the 60th minute with Ignacio Castillo putting it just high enough to get it over Damschen. Overall, the Cardinals put eleven shots on goal to the Knights’ seven. To have a hope of making the playoffs, the men now need to win out and get some help.

The Cardinals’ final league home game of 2019 is Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 3:15 p.m. against Columbia Basin College.
