MEN’S SOCCER: Hawks hold Cards 3-1

NWAC East soccer continued to be wild on Saturday as the Cardinal men’s soccer team visited Columbia Basin College and returned with a loss. The Cardinals’ Isaiah Damschen had a huge save early on, tipping a free-kick wide of the upper left corner. Minutes later, Juan Mendoza put the Hawks up off of a cutback from Sebastian Ramos. Then Jason Cortes got a foot to a looping stray ball and popped it over Damschen to make it 2-0.

The Cardinals made a handful of subs and looked much better building their attack. In the 35th minute, Ethan Williams played Mac Stultz down the left flank. Stultz beat the Hawks’ right back and served a left-footed cross to Noah Dreves at the far post who scored his fourth goal of the season. In the remaining minutes of the half, Greyden Lee found Dreves in behind the Hawk defense. Andrew Abalan intercepted a pass in the attacking third, but the Cardinals couldn’t find the net on either opportunity. Hawks ended the half with the 2-1 lead.

The Cardinals continued to find some seams at the start of the second half. Dreves got behind the defense again but missed while Bob Green created two quality opportunities. Green missed the far post on one, then had a free-kick scream just over the crossbar. Damschen continued to make great saves to keep the game close. Mendoza struck again in the 74th minute though and the final was 3-1 in the Hawks’ favor.

NIC is now 4-4-2 overall and 2-2-1 in conference play – just one game below the playoff line.

Spokane Community College visits NIC Saturday, Oct. 5, at 2:15 p.m.
