WOMEN'S SOCCER: NIC has success on the road

9/8/19

In two matches on the road this weekend, North Idaho College Cardinals got a tie against Rogue CC Osprey and a win against Lane CC Titans.

The opening game of the weekend was against Rogue in Medford, Oregon. Kelsey Wilkins got the Cardinals off to a good start scoring two goals in the first half. Both were assisted by Lake City product, Tiana Cydell who played big diagonal balls from her right back position behind the defense for Wilkins to run onto and then finish past the keeper. In the second half, the Osprey got one back followed by Autumn Stewart scoring for NIC. Then RCC hit to long high balls that got over the NIC keeper's hands to tie the game.

Sunday's game was a rematch between NIC and Lane CC that ended with the same score as the first contest played during the NWAC Friendlies, 4-0. Berenice Chavez opened the scoring in the first half when Kiani Hill played the ball through the Titan back line to Chavez who placed the ball past the LCC keeper. The other 3 goals occurred in the second half after the Cardinals wore the Titans down. First, Maya Lewis hit a free kick from about 30 yards away from goal. The keeper made the initial save, but Halley Marschall was there to knock the rebound into goal for her first goal of the year. With 7 minutes left in the game Sydney Moore got a pass just behind one of the defenders and proceeded to cut the 3 times against the Titan center back finishing with a shot through the keeper's hands. The final goal started with great defending by the NIC midfield. Maya Lewis intercepted a pass and then played a through ball to Autumn Stewart who blasted the ball past the goalie for the final tally.

"It was a successful weekend even though we didn't win both games. We learned a lot about ourselves from the first game and played much better in the game against Lane CC," commented Head Coach Dan Hogan.

League play opens on Wednesday at home for the Cardinals with them facing Wenatchee Valley College at 2pm on Eisenwinter Field.
