MEN'S SOCCER: Warriors Eliminate Cardinals

10/23/17

The Warriors eliminated the Cardinals’ playoff hopes Saturday in Walla Walla by a score of 3-2.  The Cardinals went down early when the Warriors capitalized on an opportunity up the middle with Missael Lopez feeding Freddy Rodriguez for the 1-0 lead in the 18th minute.  Minutes later, the Cardinals shifted Irvin Angulo up top from the back, and Angulo found the net off of a rebound of a Cade Roske shot.  Walla Walla got one more in the 39th minute though with Enrique Leal finding Alberto Anguiano 20 yards from goal.  Anguiano’s shot got by Cardinal goalkeeper Luis Hernandez low and to the left to make it 2-1 just before the half for the Warriors.  The Warriors came out just as strong after the half with Juan Martinez getting around the corner on the Cardinals’ left side.  Martinez’s pass found Freddy Rodriguez at the near post, punching it in from close range with his toe at the 57 minute mark.  The Cardinals immediately shifted from a 4 back system to a 3 back system and frequently got within scoring range over the final 33 minutes.  Four minutes into the Cardinal 3-4-3, Cade Roske buried a left-footed rip from 25 yards out.  Protecting a 3-2 lead, the Warriors packed everyone into their defensive third as the Cardinals shelled them.  Armando Perez, Omar Hernandez, Oscar Padilla, and Parker Gorrill all got to the endline on the right side to serve balls into the goal mouth, but the Cardinals couldn’t connect.  Cade Roske, Irvin Angulo, and Conner Kinnune all got loose up the middle and down the left to no avail.  In the 88th minute, the Cardinals drew a penalty kick, but the goalkeeper guessed correctly which forced Roske to adjust his shot on the fly and just over the net.  In the end, the 3-2 loss had the same impact as a tie would have had.

The Cardinals will not make the playoffs this year.  Their final 2017 game will be at 7:15pm at Spokane Falls Community College.
