SOFTBALL: Cardinal open the season with a split in Florida


The Cardinals split on day one of competition in Clermont, Florida. In game one, the Cardinals came out strong in the first inning vs. the Czech Republic National Team scoring 3 runs when Ashlyn Winn led-off with a double, Jori Kerr then singled to score Winn. Madi Mott then walked and Devinne Amesquita doubled to score Kerr and Mott. The Czech Republic scored one run in the first inning but the Cardinals shut them down the rest of the game. Devinne Amesquita finished the day with 4 RBI’s. Madi Mott had 5 strike outs and only allowed 2 hits.

In game two the Cards faced Lake-Sumter State College, an NJCAA program from Florida. The Cardinals came out strong and scored 3 runs in the first inning and then the bats went silent, losing 9-4. Freshman Sarah Williams accounted for all 4 RBI’s in the game, going 3-4 with 2 doubles and a single. Freshman pitchers Grace Ferres and Andrea Hoey had their collegiate debut, only giving up 3 earned runs combined.

The Cardinals will be back in action tomorrow at 1:00pm EST vs. NJCAA #12 ranked Seminole State College.
