WOMEN'S SOCCER: NIC blanks Yakima Valley

In the rematch of the only loss in league for the Cardinals, North Idaho College shutout Yakima Valley College 2-0 on Eisenwinter Field. The first half finished 0-0, but it was a preview of the physical second half in which YVC lost there starting center forward at the 70th minute of the game when she and NIC defender, Emmaleah Allen, got tangled up after Allen cleared the ball out the NIC penalty area. The Yak forward punched the NIC defender resulting in a red card for Yakima Valley's player.

With 15 minutes left in the game, Head Coach Dan Hogan subbed freshman forward, Autumn Stewart into the game. "She asked me if I had any extra instructions and I told her to go score a goal," commented Hogan. In the 82nd minute of the game, Ellory Ferris fed Stewart the ball behind the Yak defenders. Stewart used her speed to dribble ahead of the recovering defenders and as the Yakima Valley keeper came off her line Stewart slipped the ball into the right side of the net to break the tie and put NIC on top 1-0. Three minutes later a through ball was played along the right side of the field to Cardinals forward, Linnea Pretzer. Pretzer beat a defender and dribble at the goal. As other defenders started to converge on her, Pretzer passed the ball to Zoe Lee in front of the goal and Lee slotted the ball in the right side of the net for an insurance goal, 2-0.

The win, coupled with CC of Spokane's tie with Wenatchee Valley College, put the Cardinals atop the NWAC East Region with 3 games to play. The top 3 teams, NIC, Walla Walla CC, and Spokane, are all very close in the standings with only 2 points separating the 3 teams. Columbia Basin College and Yakima Valley still have a chance to make the play offs as well. NIC travels to Pasco, Wash. on Wednesday to play Columbia Basin College.
