MEN’S SOCCER: Cardinals fall to the Knights

Wenatchee Valley moved ahead of the Cardinals in the NWAC East standings on Saturday with a win at NIC’s Eisenwinter Field. The Knights outshot the Cardinals 20 to 14, and went away with a 3-0 win. The teams played a pretty even first half, with the Cardinals attempting seven shots to the Knights' six. Each keeper recorded five saves in the first half, and the Cardinals earned four corners to two for the Knights. The Cardinals were most dangerous with Ezra Grossglauser getting around the corner, serving balls back in after clearances by the Knights, and Conner Wold nearly broke free twice in the final minutes of the first half. It was 0-0 at the half, but the Knights earned an early free kick from 25 yards out. Johan Espinoza’s free kick went up and around the wall for the lead in the 51st minute. Both teams continued to create chances, but it was the Knights that scored again in the 81st, again Johan Espinoza. At that point, the Cardinals pulled a defender and added a forward, and though they created chances, it was the Knights that got one more goal in the 88th minute.
The Cardinals fall to 1-1-1 in league play and are on the road Wednesday at Walla Walla CC. The Warriors currently lead the NWAC East.
