WOMEN'S SOCCER: Two wins start the Cardinals' league season

NIC started the NWAC East Division league play with a couple of wins on Friday and Saturday against Treasure Valley CC and Blue Mountain CC.

In Friday's game the Cardinals started the game giving up a goal early in the first half and struggled to find some rhythm on offense. The second was better as NIC started moving the ball around putting pressure on the TVCC defense. Finally, Maya Lewis drove toward the goal line just right of the goal and crossed the ball in front of the goal where it hit a recovering Chukar deflecting into goal. The "own goal" opened up the Cardinals' attack, but it still took two defenders for NIC to score the goals. The first was by Sofia Schnepf in the 72nd minute as she cut the ball inside from the right side of the field putting the ball on her favored left foot and cranked a shot over the TVCC goalkeeper. Not to be outdone by her defensive teammate, Ashley Camacho, dribbled up the left side of the field cutting right past a defender and then caught TVCC's goalie with a chip over her head only 4 minutes later. Schnepf also scored NIC's finally tally. This one was using her head on a corner kick by Linnea Pretzer who crossed the ball from the left corner to the back post where Schnepf got up high to head the ball into goal giving NIC a 4-1 victory.

On Saturday a "hat trick" by Ellory Ferris and by Linnea Pretzer helped NIC power by Blue Mountain CC 10-1. Goals were also scored by Sydney Moore and Melissa Decker and, in her first game back from a hamstring injury, Zoe Lee found the net twice late in the game.

The Cardinals travel to Yakima Valley College on Wednesday to face the Yaks at 4pm and then return home Saturday, Sept. 15th to play Wenatchee Valley College at 12 noon.
