VOLLEYBALL: Cardinals opened at NWAC Crossover

On Saturday the Cardinals first match was against Edmonds Community College. With our lead hitter, Kayla Neumann, out for the day the Cardinals had to make many adjustments. Though they may not have had the full starting line up, the Cardinals battled hard but weren’t able to finish. Edmonds won 21-25 in set one and 19-25 in set two. NIC bounced back well and came out on fire against the returning NWAC champions, Chemeketa Community College taking it to them in 2 sets, 25-16 and 25-9. With momentum on the Cardinals side they stepped back onto the court right away to take on Pierce College. The Cardinals did an outstanding job of playing together as a team and were able to finish the game in two sets with a win, 25-14 and 25-23. The last game of the day was against Linn Benton, who is and always will be a rival after NIC's losses the last two years NWAC championships. The Cardinals matched up very well with Linn Benton going back and forth every game. Unfortunately, with Linn Benton’s fast tempo and strong middles, NIC was unable to hold them off and LBCC won in 3. 21-25, 27-25 and 20-22.

The next morning the Cardinals jumped on the courts early to take on Bellevue Community College. NIC came out strong shutting Bellevue's big hitters down and beating them easily with a score of 25-19 in the first set, but BCC bounced back, getting the win 12-25 and 9-15. NIC finished the weekend off playing Highline Community College. The Cardinals started slow and weren’t able to get any momentum going throughout the first set, losing 18-25. In the second set, North Idaho made many adjustments and started to become more aggressive at the net, but it still wasn’t enough losing the second set 23-25.

“Overall, the weekend was great competition and we got to play lots of volleyball. I saw progress from last weekend to this weekend which is showing me that we are getting better. We have a lot of girls that are still trying to, not only get familiar with one another, but also learning their position. We aren’t even close to what we can be, which is exciting to see because if we can stick with these teams right now their is no doubt in my mind we can out play them at the end of the season. We just need to keep plugging away, one day at a time,” commented Head Coach Kelsey Stanley.
