WRESTLING: Cards Finish Strong on Day One at Nationals

02/23/2018

The 5th ranked NIC Cardinals recovered from a slow start to remain in contention for a top 5 finish at the NJCAA National Wrestling Championships in Council Bluffs, Iowa on Friday. After only winning 4 of their first 9 matches in the opening round, the Cards battled back to send five wrestlers on to day 2 of the tournament. All wrestlers still competing on the second day are guaranteed a top 8 finish and All-American credentials. The two returning Cardinal All-Americans, Levi Perry (184 lbs) and Damian Trujillo (285 lbs.) both remain in contention in the winner's bracket to compete for an individual national title. Three other Cardinals are alive in the consolation bracket and can finish as high as 3rd: freshman Esco Walker Jr (125), sophomore Thomas Stevenson (157), and freshman Jacob Swift (174).

The NJCAA team rankings were released two days before the start of the tournament, and the polls were fairly accurate as the top 9 vote getters currently fill the top 9 spots in the tournament team standings. The Cardinals are currently in 7th place, but are only 5 points out of 4th place. The complete standings follow, with rankings in parentheses:
