MEN'S BASKETBALL: Defense the key to victory again

The 5th ranked Cardinals started off a slow but the defense picked up the slack in a 72-54 victory over Blue Mountain CC Saturday night at Rolly Williams Court. Down 22-9 early in the first half, NIC (16-5, 6-2) went on a 21-3 run to take a 30-27 halftime lead. The strong defensive effort continued in the second half as the Cards held the Timberwolves ((3-15, 0-8) to 27 second-half points. Sophomore Charles Williams led three players in double figures with 15 points on 5 of 9 shooting. NIC focused on getting the ball inside to Freshman Jarod Greene and Sophomore Seth Christiaens. It paid dividends with Greene getting 14 points and 5 rebounds and Christiaens 11 points and 6 rebounds.  Sophomore Tyler Brimhall tossed in 8 points, hitting 2 of 3 attempts from beyond the arc while grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds. In all, the Cardinals outrebounded the Timberwolves

46-26. “I was happy with the way the guys responded with that nice run after the slow start,” said Head Coach Corey Symons. “Our bigs really came through tonight.”
