MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards win battle of top 5 teams

The fifth ranked North Idaho College Cardinals won a hard-fought 90-81 victory over the visiting 4th-seeded Everett Trojans Friday night at the Coeur d’Alene INN-Vitational. The Cards held the Trojans scoreless for the first 5:30 of the game and roared out to a 21-point lead. However the Trojans battled back to close the gap to 41-33 at the half. Everett was able to whittle the lead down to 5, but the Cardinal defense responded to secure the team’s 6th consecutive victory.

Tyler Brimhall led 5 Cards in double figures with a fine all-around game, leading all scorers with 27 points including 9 of 9 from the charity strip. The sophomore also grabbed 9 rebounds. Freshman RayQuan Evans tossed in 17 points and 9 rebounds while Sophomore Aushanti Potts-Woods tallied 16, Freshman Jarod Greene 12 and Sophomore Jalen Burkett 11.

Sophomore Gio Jackson led the Trojans with 25 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

“Our defense really set the stage early on,” said Head Coach Corey Symons. “It was a real battle.”
