MEN'S SOCCER: NIC wins wild one against Wenatchee

10/11/2017

The Cardinals played a wild one against Wenatchee and came out on top 5-3 on Wednesday. Wenatchee had the run of play early, but Irvin Angulo had a goal line save as the men protected the goal. At the 23 minute mark, Parker Gorrill got loose in the right flank and served it in to Cade Roske. Roske buried a header for the 1-0 lead. Ten minutes later Roske hit the post on another header and Riley Glover put the rebound away to extend the lead. A Wenatchee coach was ejected just before the half, and the Cardinals led 2-0 with 6 saves by Luis Hernandez.

The second half started ugly for the Cardinals. They gave away 2 penalty kicks in the first 4 minutes. Francisco Moreno and Micah Ching both converted to tie the game 2-2. Tanner Sayer had a big save early in the half that allowed the Cardinals to take the lead in the 63rd minute. After earning a free kick in the attacking third, the ball bounced through to the far post and Omar Hernandez scored his third goal of the season for the 3-2 lead. At 75 minutes, a cleared corner kick allowed Irvin Angulo to run the ball all the way to the endline before cutting a pass back to Conner Kinnune for the 4-2 lead. Minutes later, Kinnune played a bender through to Parker Gorrill. Gorrill’s calm finish was his first collegiate goal and made it 5-2, but the Knights weren’t done. Pressing and sending everything deep, Romario Martinez finally found Greysen to cut the lead back to 2. When the Cardinals went the other way in the 81st, Irvin Angulo juggled over two defenders to get into the box and got a cross off as Riley Glover barely missed connecting at the far post. The final minutes had more fireworks with one of the Knights earning a red card in the 90th. The final was 5-3 as the Cardinals earned an entertaining 3 points.

NIC hosts league leaders Columbia Basin on Wednesday at 3:15pm.
