VOLLEYBALL: Cardinals win 2 to Remain Undefeated in NWAC Play

09/24/2017

The NIC Volleyball team had back to back home games this weekend, starting with rival Blue Mountain Community College on Friday, Sept 22. The Cardinals, once again, started off slowly, losing the first and third sets to go down, 2-1. NIC won the 2nd and 4th sets comfortably , but then barely squeaked by to win the fifth set, 15-13. "We are not setting the tone for our games" said head coach Kelsey Stanley. "We are sitting back and waiting for the other team to take action. It felt like we finally competed the last game and it shouldn't feel like that. I give credit to the Timberwolves for coming out and playing harder than us to start the match".

BMCC Match Final scores: 20-25, 25-15, 22-25, 25-11, 15-13

On Saturday afternoon, September 23, NIC faced Yakima Valley College in Christianson Gym. Yakima Valley set the tempo in the first game and came out with a 21-25 win. The Yaks victory apparently served as a wake-up call, as the Cardinals slowly started to show moments of teamwork and won game two, 26-24. The Cards carried the momentum into the locker room, and came out strong to win games 3 and 4 convincingly to win the match. "We truly are the slowest starting team I've ever seen. Until we can get that figured out teams are going to take advantage of that. Outside-hitter Kayla Neumann (Sandpoint, ID) did an outstanding job of stepping up and giving the Cardinals some huge points at the end."

YVC Match Final scores:  21-25, 26-24, 25-14, 25-15

With the weekend sweep the Cardinals remain undefeated at 4-0 in the NWAC East, and 14-2 overall. The Cardinals continue their six game home stand with a Friday night (Sept 29) match-up with Walla Walla Community College at 6:00pm. The Cardinals shared the NWAC East title with WWCC last season. The home stand ends with a match-up against border rival Community Colleges of Spokane on Wednesday, October 4, at 6:00pm.

The volleyball game with CCS is part of the Cardinal Homecoming tripleheader, with both soccer teams playing Spokane earlier in the afternoon on October 4. The first 100 spectators to the volleyball and soccer games will receive a Cardinals t-shirt, sponsored by the Coeur d'Alene Casino and Resort hotel. The Homecoming festivities will begin with a cookout for Cardinal fans at the Soccer match, beginning at 2:00pm on Eisenwinter Field.
