MEN'S SOCCER: NIC loses to league leaders

09/24/2017

The Cardinals traveled to league-leading Columbia Basin on Saturday, and the Hawks took a lead in the 19th minute.  Isaiah Arichega fed Israel Gonzales up the middle, and Gonzales finished running to his left into the right side of the net.  Sixteen minutes later though, the Cardinals tied things up when Irvin Angulo flicked a heel pass to Cade Roske in the box.  The Hawks quickly fouled Roske, and Roske put away his penalty shot.  It was 1-1 at the half.  In the 54th minute, the Hawks drew a foul on the left flank and connected with Gonzales again, again finishing to the right side of the goal with his left foot.  At 62 minutes, Jesus Delgado made it 3-1, and the Cardinals switched to a higher risk style of play.  The men were successful in opening up the game as Roske, Angulo, and Conner Kinnune all broke through the back line.  Roske also hit the crossbar on a free kick, but the Hawks put another one in at 86, again it was Delagado.  Just before time expired, Angulo got loose on the left side and cut it back to Kinnune.  Kinnune put this one away, and the final score was 2-4.  The Hawks outshot NIC 16-14 with NIC putting 10 on goal to the Hawks’ 8.  Tanner Sayer recorded 3 saves, and Luis Hernandez recorded two for the Cardinals.  Andres Mendoza made 8 saves for the Hawks.

The Cardinals are now 1-2 in conference play and travel to Blue Mountain on Friday.
