MEN'S SOCCER: NIC wins league opener

The Cardinal men went to Wenatchee on Saturday for their league opener and left with a 4-1 win and a 1-0 league record.  It was almost halftime before the Cardinals got a goal though.  Shortly after being subbed in, Omar Hernandez found Conner Kinnune on a ball up the middle.  Kinnune took two touches as he approached the goal and calmly slid the ball under Wenatchee goalkeeper Jose Chairez in the 40th minute.  Four minutes into the second half though, the Knights flicked a throw-in into the penalty area and Lenin Guzman tied the score at 1-1.  As the half wore on, both teams created more opportunities, but only NIC's Irvin Angulo found the net, and he did it three times in the last fifteen minutes.  In the 75th, Conner Kinnune bent a pass around the Knights center back to find Angulo up the middle.  Angulo slammed a left-footed shot past second half goalkeeper for the Knights Ulysses Gonzalez.  In the 82nd minute, Oscar Padilla played a corner to the near corner of the goal box and Angulo headed it into the near post corner for his second goal.  Two minutes later, Creed McKinnon fed Angulo at the top of the penalty area to make it 4-1 and complete the hat trick.

The Cardinals are now 1-0 in conference and 2-3 overall.  They host rivals Walla Walla CC on Wednesday at 4:15pm.
