WOMEN'S SOCCER: Cardinals earn first league win

North Idaho College Cardinals and Yakima Valley CC Yaks fought to a 1-0 victory for the Cardinals in their opening league match. Although it was a low scoring affair, the game was anything, but boring as it was end to end action throughout the match. The star of the game for NIC was sophomore goal keeper, Kinzie Hunter, who had 8 saves. Some of those were one on one with YVCC forwards and one in which she dove to make an initial stop and then got up off the ground and raced a Yak player to get to the rebound.

The only score of evening started with Ashley Camacho, freshman defender from Las Vegas for the Cardinals, playing the ball wide on the left side of the penalty area to Marisol Guerrero, a sophomore from Reno, Guerrero whipped in a cross to the near post where NIC leading scorer Linnea Pretzer was challenging the Yakima goal keeper. The goalie was only able to deflect the ball and the deflection caromed off a Yak defender into goal.

"Kinzie had an outstanding game, making some great saves to keep Yakima off the scoreboard," commented Head Coach of the Cardinals, Dan Hogan, "Yakima was putting a lot of pressure on us in the last 10 minutes of the game and only an outstanding defensive effort from all of our players preserved the win."

NIC is 3-2 overall and 1-0 in league play. The will travel to Wenatchee Valley College on Saturday to take on the Knights.
