MEN'S SOCCER: Cardinals improve

The Cardinals continued to take steps forward as a team this weekend with a split at home.  On Friday, the Tacoma Titans, defending NWAC champions, got away with a tight 2-1 win.  The Titans scored first.  In the 36th minute, Tacoma played the ball behind Cardinal back line, and Leo Tizoc-Parra rolled it into the right side of the net for the lead.  Just ahead of halftime though, Abel Lima played Cade Roske over the Titans’ right center back.  Roske put a left-footed chip over the goalkeeper for a goal in the forty-fourth minute, and it was 1-1 at the half.  At the 63 minute mark, the Titans scored what proved to be the game-winning goal on a free kick by Saidi Myenyeheri.  Myenyeheri went low and to the right from twenty-two yards out.

On Saturday, Everett visited Eisenwinter Field.  NIC scored early.  Left back Irvin Angulo broke free in the right flank and turned the corner in the fifth minute.  When he reached the endline he floated a chip to the middle of the goal and Armando Perez headed it home for the lead.  In the 25th minute, Shane Gillette dribbled at the Trojans’ back line and played Cade Roske in behind.  Roske scored another left-footer to make the lead 2-0.  Looking to shore up the defense in the second half, the Cardinals shifted Roske into midfield and kept Beau Chandler in up top.  Chandler was a lot to manage for the Trojans’ backs, and nearly came up with a goal a few times.  It wasn’t until the 89th minute that the Cardinals made it 3-0 though.  With Everett pressing, Armando Perez combined with Omar Hernandez and made a run from center back to get on the end of Hernandez’s pass.  Running at speed to the right, Perez went for the upper left corner for the goal despite Trojan goalkeeper Zach Gadukov getting a hand to the ball.  The Cardinals play their league opener at Blue Mountain Community College on Friday at 4:15pm.
