WOMEN'S SOCCER: NIC goes 1 and 1 at the NWAC Friendlies

The Cardinals played in Tukwila, Wash. for the NWAC Friendlies against two opponents who finished second in their division last year just like NIC. The first game was against a strong Lane CC team from Eugene, Oregon. The Titans got on the board early in the first half scoring from a corner kick. The scored again early in the second half when a chipped ball got over the Cardinals goalkeeper. About 10 minutes later, Chelsea Love deflected a shot from Abby Roberts away from Lane's keeper and into the net. A short while later, Lane midfielder Sydney Holborrow, hit a shot just under the crossbar to tally the final goal of the game.

In NIC's second game the Cardinals played Everett CC from the North division. Linnea Pretzer, a freshman forward from Idaho Falls, contributed on all three of the Cardinals goals. The first one, 14 minutes into the game, saw Pretzer play a ball through the back line for Aunika Capps, a forward from Naches, Wash., to run onto and attack the goal on the dribble. Capps saw the Trojan goalie come off the line and placed a shot just inside the left post for her first goal of the season. All the other goals came in the second half. First was Everett's goal, a high shot from the right side of the field. Less than 10 minutes later, Pretzer hit a corner kick from the right corner which found Erica Powell on the back post for the Cardinals second score of the game. With about 6 minutes left, Pretzer took another corner kick, this time from the left side. The ball was struck well with a lot of curve to it and bent into goal before the Everett keeper could get to it. At this point, NIC relaxed a bit too much and allowed the Trojans to score their second goal of the game.

"It was a good two game stretch for us," commented NIC Head Coach Dan Hogan, "In both games we saw areas we need to improve, but we also saw instances where the players have already began to put into play the tactics we have been working on in practice."

The Cardinals are home for their next 2 games. This Friday, Sept. 1st, you'll find them playing Tacoma CC at 2pm on Eisenwinter Field on the NIC campus and that will be followed the next day by a rematch with Everett CC at 12pm also at home.
