SOFTBALL: Cardinals finish 5th at NWAC Championships

The Cardinals opened up strong on Friday at the NWAC Championships at Dwight Merkel Sports Complex in Spokane. In game one, the Cards earned their first shut-out of the year against a tough Bellevue College with a score of 4-0. Kayla Moore earned the win in the circle. Kennedy Anderson went 2-4 with 3 RBI’s. Jamie Yurick hit a solo homerun in the 7th inning to score the 4th run of the game.

In game two, NIC faced off against East Region foe Wenatchee Valley College. Nikki Miller went 2-4 with 2 RBI’s. Kennedy Anderson went 2-4 with one solo home run. The Cards pulled out the victory to push them through to the winners bracket on Saturday.

On day two of the championships, NIC faced off against Walla Walla Community College. Nikki Miller went 2-4 with 2 RBI’s with a two run homerun. Kennedy Anderson went 3-4 with a home run and 1 RBI. Kalyna Korok went 3-3 with a double, Jamie Yurick went 2-4 and Megan Carver went 1-3 with 1 RBI. The Cards fell short and lost the game against the Warriors and were bumped into the loser’s bracket.

In game four, the Cards faced off against Bellevue College again in the elimination game. Nikki Miller went 2-4 and Natalie Schwab went 2-2. Makenzie Schaller went 4-4 with 1 RBI. The Cards lost 15-5 to be eliminated.

Four Cardinals earned All-Region honors. Nikki Miller earned 1st Team All-East Region for catcher. Jamie Yurick earned 1st Team All-East Region honors in the outfield. Kayla Curtan earned 2nd Team All-East Region honors for short stop. Kennedy Anderson earned 2nd Team All-East Region honors. Anderson also earned NFCA All-American Honors. Anderson had a .500 B.A. with 85 hits, 14 doubles, 16 home runs, and 82 RBI’s on the season.
