Softball Bows Out of NWAC Tournament

The surprising run of the NIC softball team ended on the second day of the NWAC Championship Tournament at Dwight Merkel Sports Complex. The #11 seed Cardinals went 2-0 on day one against higher seeds, but went 0-2 on Day 2. The Cards were one of 4 undefeated teams on Friday to enter the semifinals of the winners bracket, facing league rival Walla Walla CC. A throwing error on the first play of the game led to an inside the park home run and the Cardinals faced their first deficit of the tournament. Despite falling behind 5-2, the Cards battled back to tie the game at 5-5 in the fifth inning on home runs by Kennedy Anderson and Nikki Miller. Unfortunately the Cards were unable to maintain momentum and lost 9-6 to fall into the loser out bracket.

In Game 2 the Cards faced Bellevue College, a team they defeated in the tournament opener, 4-0. On this day the Bulldog bats were hot from the start and they jumped on the Cardinals early to lead 5-0. The Cards answered with 3 runs in the bottom of the 2nd to get within 5-3. Unfortunately at this time the Bulldogs went to their bullpen and silenced the Cards bats as they pulled away. Bellevue scored 10 more against the tired Cardinals pitching staff to end the game 15-5. The Cardinals finished tied for 5th place to end the season.

The NWAC tournament concludes on Monday, May 22, with top seeded Douglas College facing #3 Wenatchee Valley at 11:00a.m. Walla Walla CC finished 3rd and Bellevue College finished 4th. The championship games can be viewed at
