Wrestling Finishes 2nd at Districts. Qualify 7 to Nationals

The NIC Cardinal wrestling team took second place at the NJCAA West District tournament this past weekend at Coos Bay, Oregon, and qualified 7 wrestlers for the NJCAA National Tournament on Feb 24-25th in Council Bluffs, Iowa.  NIC had four wrestlers make the finals and finish 2nd place: Thomas Stevenson (149), Brent Evans (157), Levi Perry (184) and Boony Merryweather (197).  NIC had six wrestlers finish 3rd place: Garrett White (125), Bryson Beard (133), Hassan Hawthorne (141), Trey Meyer (165), Alex Aguilar (174) and Conner Sullivan (285). Unfortunately three of the Cardinal 3rd place finishers did not qualify for the NJCAA national tournament as wildcard selections. With the redistricting of teams in the West District from 6 to 4 teams, the number of qualifiers from the District was reduced to 28 Wrestlers, despite having all 4 teams ranked in the NJCAA top 20. White, Hawthorne and Sullivan did not qualify for Nationals.

Clackamas CC, ranked #2 in the final NJCAA poll won the West District title with a score of 104.5 points. The Cardinals, ranked #6, finished with 70 points to edge #8 Southwestern Oregon CC, with 67 points. Highline College, #19 in the polls, finished with 48.5 points.

The NJCAA tournament begins on February 24 at 9:00am PST. All matches can be followed on the NJCAA website, and a link will be posted to the NIC website at
