MEN’S BASKETBALL: Hot start leads to big victory over Yakima Valley

The Cardinals came out of the locker room on fire, shooting 71% from the field in the first half, 61% for the game, leading to a 98-70 victory Saturday at Yakima Valley CC.  Adam Gotelli and Nike Bevins were 4-for-4 and 4-for-5 respectively from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes as the Cards raced out to a 57-30 halftime lead.  The NIC bench played major minutes in the second half, led by Sophomore Jordan Henderson, who poured in 17 points along with a game-high 11 rebounds.

“Jordan was outstanding coming off the bench, it was nice to see him gain a little confidence and do what we’ve always known that he could,” said Head Coach Corey Symons.

Besides Henderson’s big night, four other Cardinals scored in double figures. Sophomore Sam Dowd tossed in 12 points while the NWAC’s leader in assists handed out 10 more, many to Freshman Marcus Golder who shot 8-of-12 from the field, finishing with a game-high 19 points along with 6 rebounds. Adam Gotelli was solid, contributing 15 points while Niko Bevens added 14.

NIC, now 19-3 overall (7-2) in the NWAC, one game out of first place in the Eastern Conference, return home to host Columbia Basin 2-19 (1-9) Wednesday night. Tip-off at 8pm.
