MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cardinals Win Streak Stopped at Walla Walla
Former Post Falls High School star Dalton Thompson hit two free throws with 10 seconds remaining to seal the victory as Walla Walla Community College knocked off the Cardinals 98-95, snapping NIC’s 13-game winning streak. Trailing 94-93, sophomore Sam Dowd, who finished with a game-high 33 points along with 6 assists, stole the inbounds pass and raced the length of the court for a lay-in to give NIC a 95-94 lead with 30 seconds remaining. However, Walla Walla sophomore Gabe Porter, who finished with a team-high 32 points, responded with a bucket to give the Warriors the lead back at 96-95. Freshman Niko Bevens, the NWAC’s leading 3-point shooter, had a potential game-tying bucket rattle out and the Warriors claimed the victory.
Sophomore Zaequan Satterthwaite finished with 18 points and 9 rebounds, while freshman Marcus Golder ended up with a double-double, 17 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Jalen Burkett continued his strong inside play with 12 points on 6 of 7 shooting, before fouling out.
The difference in the ballgame was at the 3 point arc, as Walla Walla shot a blistering 48% on 19-40 shooting from long distance. The Cardinals meanwhile had a season low attempts from 3 point range, making 4 of only 7 shots. With the loss the Cardinals fall a half game back in the NWAC East behind #5 ranked Walla Walla (4-1, 13-4 overall).
The Cardinals, now 15-2 overall and 3-1 in the NWAC East, continue their road trip this Saturday at Spokane Falls Community College to face the Sasquatch (2-2 NWAC East, 13-4 overall).
