Cardinals win earns home playoff game

The Cardinals entered Saturday needing a win combined with a Spokane win to clinch second in the NWAC East, but it didn’t look like it’d go that way early. Despite create four quality chances in the first minutes of the game, the Cardinals went down to Wenatchee 2-0. Scoring for the Knights in the 8th minute was Dilan Calva, assisted by Cristian Talavera. Lenin Guzman scored on a free kick in the 26th minute for the second goal. Two minutes later though, the Cardinals combined, finding Alec Maldonado who dropped it to Max Mularski. Mularski hit a dipping shot from 28 yards out to cut the deficit to 2-1. Minutes before the half, the Cardinals got Irvin Angulo around the corner. Angulo cut it back to Koby Murphree for the calm finish at the near post, and it was 2-2 at the half. Again, the Cardinals created quality chances throughout the second half. The game winner came in the 88th minute after Alec Maldonado finished a rebound of a shot by Muganza Katanga. The Cardinals won by a score of 3-2.

Later in the day, the results worked out in the Cardinals’ favor. As a result, NIC finished second in the NWAC East this year and will host Pierce College at Spokane Falls CC on Wednesday at 6pm in the first round of the playoffs.
