Volleyball opens season

The volleyball team playing the preseason opener in Springfield, Oregon in the NWAC Friendlies Crossover. The Cardinals opened the season against Chemeketa, Highline, Tacoma and Walla Walla. The first game with Chemeketa was a back and forth battle. Being first game of the season NIC had a lot of jitters, especially in some of the freshmen. The girls finished strong and won the last game winning the match 2-1. Cardinals had to bounce back fast getting back on the court to go up against Highline. Highline showed lots of talent along with hard work and they came away with a 0-2 win over the Cardinals. After that tough loss the girls regrouped and finished the day off with Tacoma, beating them in 2, and finally beating Walla Walla in 3 sets.

The next morning the Cardinals started with the defending NWAC champions, Blue Mountain Community College. The Cardinals came out slow, with no energy and Blue Mountain took advantage of it and took the first game. NIC slowly woke up and started using their brains and finding open spots on the floor to win the second game. Going into the third game NIC once again started out slow and was unable to come back and lost it's second match. The Cardinals ended the tournament against Linn Benton, losing in 3.

“This weekend was a great eye opener. I enjoyed how the tournament was run, having the best teams play one another. It was nice to see who we have to compete with and what we need to do to be the best. We have a long ways to go, and I guess we just need to take one day at a time. I have the talent, we now just need to start using it at the right times and play together.” Said head coach, Kelsey Stanley
